Honda Element history and design
Launched in 2002 for the 2003 model year, the Honda Element was originally designed for young adults with active lifestyles. Inspired by the look of lifeguard stations, Honda created a compact crossover that could easily haul a 10-foot surfboard, mountain bike or other adventure gear. Plus, the side cargo doors, removable rear seats and stain-resistant interior make it easy to do so. Unfortunately, the Honda Element never really found footing with its intended target market—or perhaps was just too quirky for its time—and was discontinued in 2011.
Honda Element features to look for
All Honda Elements belong to a single generation, so you can expect similar features across every model year. This compact crossover offers seating for four and generous cargo space. Models from 2003 to 2009 are available with your choice of manual or automatic transmission, while 2010 and 2011 models were only produced with automatic. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are available on all models from 2004 onwards. All models are equipped with a capable but efficient four-cylinder engine delivering 156 to 166 horsepower. While the Honda Element predates today's advanced driver's assistance technologies, it did receive excellent safety ratings. Standard safety features include six airbags and four-wheel anti-lock brakes.
